I have been having lessons with Silvia for the past year and I am really impressed with her teaching. Starting as a complete beginner, through Silvia’s lessons I have progressed much quicker than I thought possible. Her lessons are lively and informative, she gives you the confidence to develop conversations and even learning the essential grammar was less difficult than imagined. Silvia tailors’ lessons to each individual and you can learn at the pace that works for you. If you are looking to learn Spanish then I would highly recommend Silvia.

My son’s partner is Costa Rican, so I figured it was time to stop trying to get by with Italian in Spanish speaking countries (works only sometimes!) and take some lessons.
Finding Silvia was a stroke of luck. She is experienced, patient and equally happy teaching Latin American or European varieties of Spanish. She quickly understood my needs, and adapted her approach in a very effective manner.
Our one hour per week lessons have improved my spoken Spanish immeasurably over the last 7 months, and I very much look forward to our time together. In conversation-based teaching, there’s always a tricky balance to be struck between fluency and accuracy. My experience is that Silvia gets it just right – enough to pick up any repeated errors but tolerant enough of small slips to let the student talk fluently.

Being married to a Chilean wife, learning Spanish had been on my to-do list for far too long. Finally, I decided to take the plunge and searched for Spanish lessons in Bury St Edmunds. Among all the profiles, Silvia’s stood out, and her website offered an insight into who she is as a person.
Starting the lessons in May 2023, I’m genuinely astonished by the progress made in just 2 months. We have two 1-hour lessons per week at my home, and every session is tailor-made to suit my level. I am a complete beginner in Spanish, but was lucky enough to join one of Silvia’s established study groups. Despite the group being more advanced, I have been welcomed and have learned a huge amount in a short time. The class is a great mix of grammar, interesting comprehension/translation exercises and conversational Spanish. I thought it might be intimidating joining an established group conducted mainly in Spanish, but Silvia has been so supportive that I feel able to make halting contributions. Silvia offers encouragement and then uses this as a springboard for discussion or grammatical illustration. The resources she provides are invaluable and I always leave the class feeling I have made progress and motivated to study more. More importantly, when my Spanish granddaughter talks to me online now, I can actually follow some of what she says and even hold a short conversation with her, that’s success!

As my son was engaged to a native Spanish speaker I started learning the language in March 2020 during the first Covid lockdown and was lucky enough to join one of Silvia’s existing Spanish groups in their weekly zoom lessons, reinforcing my Duolingo efforts.
Silvia fitted my level into the group work and the lessons conducted wholly in Spanish and are great fun. She prepares very interesting exercises and has given us very useful resources for grammar.
We now meet face to face in on of our homes and have all become friends. She is arranging a regular informal meet-up for present and ex- pupils to speak in Spanish socially.

“I met Silvia several years ago when I attended her ‘holiday spanish’ classes at West Suffolk College. Her lessons were very easy to understand and she was very patient with students of all abilities.
She later ran private classes in small groups which worked very well.I have been to her holiday house in rural Llames de Parres three times and found the whole experience very enjoyable. A long weekend was a bit too short! There were no formal lessons, we had discussions in a group or one to one with Silvia , so it was all very relaxed .
It was also a great opportunity to take in the local culture and even speak to Silvia’s friends in the village! Asturias is so unlike the usual idea of Spain. Its green and luxuriant- more like Switzerland. We were able to visit local places of interest like the lakes of Covadonga and the Picos mountains, the local towns on the river Sella, the fish restaurant in the seaside village of Lastres and the lovely beach promenade of Gijon.
We also indulged in the local cuisine ( Silvia does a very nice paella ) and the local cider which is an acquired taste! I was there in August and the local village fiesta is not to be missed. Food, drinks and great musical entertainment, for all ages, until late into the night.
With all these activities you gradually absorb some of the language and Silvia is always around to help if you need it.”

Our interest in learning Spanish initially was because our son was living in Mexico at the time.
We contacted Silvia through a mutual friend and now we have gained a new friend in Silvia!
It’s been over a year that we began our private weekly 1 hour lessons and we cannot believe how much Spanish we have enjoyed learning.
Silvia made it fun right from the start, pointing out similarities in English to make it easier to remember. Using words that we had never associated with Spanish such as Parasol, Chilli con carne. Her style of teaching makes it easier to remember particularly as I forget very quickly.
Silvia will work at your own pace, she knows when to push you further or when to slow down. And she will speak slowly giving your brain time to compute and digest all the information. We never felt embarrassed when we got things wrong, or read out loud mispronouncing words giving us confidence.
